Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Archers Attackman Marcus Holman has excelled at every stop along his lacrosse journey. Coming out of the Gilman School in Baltimore, Holman was ranked by Inside Lacrosse as the nation’s #1 recruit in the Class of 2009. He attended the University of North Carolina, where in 2010 he won Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. In 2012 & 2013, Holman was selected to the All-ACC team, nominated as a Tewaaraton Award finalist and he graduated as UNC’s all-time leading scorer.
Since graduating from college, Holman has spent the last nine seasons playing professionally, most recently in the PLL with the Archers. Holman also coaches at all levels with recent stops at the University of Utah and his alma mater, Gilman School.
Before the 2022 PLL season, Holman discussed his Q-Collar experience and the impact he believes it will have on the game of lacrosse.
Why do you wear the Q-Collar?
“For me, it was an easy choice to start wearing the Q-Collar. I want to protect myself as I continue to get older in the lacrosse ranks. The style of play that I’ve had for the past ten years is tough. I’m running through the middle getting checked a lot by defenseman who are 20 pounds heavier and four inches taller than me. When I had the option of wearing the Q-Collar, it was really a no-brainer for me. I just want to help protect myself. It was an easy choice when I consider the health of my brain for the future.”
What does it feel like to wear the Q-Collar?
“It’s just a little bit of light pressure honestly. I’ve worn it so many times now that I can’t even tell that it is on.”
How do you think the Q-Collar will impact youth lacrosse?
“I think the Q-Collar can be really important for lacrosse players of all ages because at every level we want to bring importance to the safety of our brains. For me personally, the majority of my head injuries were sustained between 8th and 11th grade. Just understanding that safety is important. That we want to be safe and protect ourselves as well as our opponents. That’s why I think the Q-Collar can be really impactful for youth lacrosse players.”
